The Hate U Give – Review

The Hate U GiveThe Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So I started reading the physical book, but then I ended up having to put it down because it was just so raw and real and at the time I tried starting this, I just couldn’t handle it. Then a few days ago, I decided to try again but with the audiobook, and let me tell you. The audiobook is the way to go with this one. All the emotion really comes out and I would find myself doing the dishes and crying because of this book.

As a white woman, this was an extremely important book for me because I have never had to go through the things that people of color have to go through. I appreciate this book so much because it felt like a true first hand account of what is going on in America today. To be honest, I wasn’t going to write a review about this book because while scrolling through the books Goodreads review page, I noticed that many of the reviews that were popping up first for me were all white women. To me that doesn’t seem right, but then I thought, if I write a review on this book, maybe that would mean that even more people will read it. And this is definitely a book that everyone should read, especially if you are white. My reason for saying that is because like I mentioned, we do not see what others have to go through on a daily basis and this is something we all need to see.

Basically this is just me saying that everyone needs to read this book. It gives a different perspective (different from the typical white perspective) on police brutality and does it in a way that really makes you stop and think. It doesn’t say that all cops are bad, or that all white people are bad. It shows us how badly we need to all work together to make the world a better place. Together.
